This sea otter is named Clara. She is a southern sea otter, native to California, where her wild cousins have been dealing with a string of atmospheric rivers. Recently, I was asked by a follower "what do sea otters do during storms, like the atmospheric rivers that are hitting California?" I answered that question here: https://youtu.be/EXzsZ_XdyxM
In this video, I asked Clara to come out of the water and show me her paw. While I love holding hands with sea otters, the reason we ask for body presents like this is so that we can check the health of the animal. We use paw, mouth, and flipper presents to check for scratches, cuts, and even lumps. Daily check-ups like this are the most important part of working with animals who live under human care.
Clara is a rescued sea otter who was deemed non-releasable after a series of unsafe encounters with humans and pets. It was determined by the NOAA and the US Fish & Wildlife Service that Clara lacked a fear of humans and this posed a danger to herself and the public.
