???? You Won’t Believe What This Armadillo Was Capable of Doing!

The armadillo is a curious and unique mammal, easily recognised by its hard shell, which functions as a true natural armour. This bony structure protects it from various predators, as seen in an impressive video where a rattlesnake tries to attack an armadillo. However, the snake’s strike had no effect, as it hit only the animal’s tough shell, leaving the armadillo completely unharmed.

Although generally seen as a peaceful creature, there are rare records of armadillos preying on other animals. Under normal conditions, their diet consists mainly of insects, larvae, ants, termites, roots, and fruits. However, some reports and video footage reveal that, opportunistically, they can feed on small, vulnerable vertebrates such as bird chicks, amphibians, or reptiles.

A curious example can be seen in a video capturing the moment an armadillo caught a lizard in the middle of the road. The scene shows the armadillo carrying the animal in its mouth until it disappears into the vegetation, likely to devour it. Another even more surprising record shows an armadillo carrying a rooster somewhere in Brazil. The man who filmed the scene was astonished, as such behaviour is far from common. It is worth noting that, in such cases, attacks usually occur against injured animals, younglings, or easy prey. In the end, the armadillo did not fare well, as the rooster’s owner quickly intervened and managed to save his bird.

These episodes stand out precisely because they are extremely rare. In general, the armadillo is not considered an active hunter or an aggressive animal. It prefers to feed on easy prey and buries itself in the ground when threatened. Yet, its versatility in survival shows that even seemingly peaceful animals can surprise us when nature demands it.
