Since the oceans make up the vast bulk of the Earth's surface, they are home to an astounding amount of life. The majority of people are likely shocked to learn that 94% of all living species are found in the oceans.
Nearly a quarter of a million aquatic species are now known.
Even though the oceans have been explored to the greatest extent on the planet, we still only know about a tiny portion of the species that live there. There are currently 240,470 accepted marine species according to the World Register of Marine Species, but this is thought to only represent a small portion of all known species. As new creatures are discovered daily, we continue to learn more about how life works and what it means to be an animal in the ocean.5% of the ocean has only been explored.
Less than 5% of the seas on Earth have been explored. With every day that goes by, we discover more about the oceans as experts look for more information.
