At first glance, it looks like a speck on the pavement—but this tiny frog is a fully developed amphibian, navigating the world one giant step at a time. Some frog species, like the Brazilian gold frog (Brachycephalus didactylus), grow to be just 0.4 inches (10 millimeters) long, yet contain all the vital organs found in much larger animals—including a brain, lungs, and a beating heart.

Frogs are critical to our ecosystems as both predator and prey, and are among the most sensitive indicators of environmental change. Alarmingly, over 40% of amphibian species are currently at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.
