The vast majority of Russian cruise missiles are currently intercepted by F-16 pilots, said Yuri Ignat, head of communications for the Air Force Command, during a telethon broadcast.

"Our pilots are setting records that have never been matched anywhere in the world. More than 30 missiles were shot down by F-16 pilots. Recently, of the 35 cruise missiles, 34 were shot down by F-16 pilots," he emphasized, commenting on one of the latest Russian mass attacks.

According to him, the first Ukrainian pilots who learned to fly the F-16 abroad essentially wrote tactics for shooting down enemy targets in Ukraine. "We had to adapt to the new conditions of war, to the enemy's use of various innovative weapons, particularly the Shahed, which had undergone a certain evolution. Often, tactics were written in blood, because we lost aircraft. Our pilots were able to demonstrate a level of performance on relatively unsophisticated equipment that, to put it mildly, surprised our partners that the seemingly inexperienced Ukrainians could use these aircraft so effectively against such an adversary," Ignat emphasized.

He also explained that, speaking generally about aviation, we have a huge number of sorties. "But of these, 1,800 sorties by our tactical aviation were for fire engagements in conditions where the enemy has a powerful air defense system and powerful aircraft that patrol virtually around the clock close to the front line. And this includes F-16s, MiG-29s, and Su-27s—that's the total number. But dozens of F-16s are already operational, and they have become a significant force in the aviation component," Ignat said.
