Abridged Transcript:
Hey guys, Equarist here and in honor of Saint Patrick's day I want to show you guys my top 5 green freshwater aquarium fish. At the end of this video put your top 5 list of your favorite green fish and make sure to like and subscribe and I’ll see you after the intro.
Now when we think of green fish we don't really know what to even think, I mean do green fish even exist, I mean obviously they do or this video wouldn't exist but you get what I mean. Yes the plants in our aquarium are green but to be honest there aren't many green fish in the aquarium trade. In fact this list is probably about half of the green freshwater fish I know of, so basically around like 10-15 species in the trade are green, but enough talking lets get right into the video.
5. Green Tiger Barbs
At number 5 we have the green tiger barb, I actually really like the look of the default tiger barb and the green one is like a nice compliment to them in a large school, make sure to use darker colored substrate so that the regular barbs will go into dark mode instead of light mode and it allows them to look more alike and blend in with each other. Tiger barbs do get a bad rep for being nippy but the larger school you get the less aggressive they will be to other fish and among themselves.
4. Green Severum
At Number 4 we have the green severum, and this isn't a very popular option among aquarists even though it's widely available. I personally don't really like the green severums compared to the other color variants like gold, red and rotkiel, but it is one of the only true green large south american cichlids I know of. I’d say a 75 gallon is the minimum tank size I’d keep them in because they do in fact get pretty big. I actually like severums a lot. They get big, they are pretty chill and easy going, and they are kinda like angelfish except I wouldn't keep them with plants. I actually had a gold severum a couple years ago and it was really personable which ate out of my hand, and let me pet it. So yea go severums.
3. My glo-betta
Number 3 is kinda a shameless plug of my glo betta. A lot of people are against the glo-bettas coming out, but I actually like them, as long as you get a good specimen which is kinda the hard part. Most of the ones I’ve seen look like they are 1 week of clocking out of life. I don't know if it's the company that's making them this way or if they like glow up and start looking much better when they are in an actual tank rather than a plastic box. I don't like the other glo-fish to be honest, like all of them are like my least favorite fish like zebra danios and white skirt tetras so you won't catch me having those glo-fish. I think a singular glo-fish in a tank is kinda cool because it's kind of like having a little night light in your house and it makes a perfect bedroom tank with the moonlights on.
2. Green Phantom Pleco
At number 2 we have the Green Phantom Pleco and let me tell you this is one of the most beautiful plecos you can own. It comes in such a unique color, and whoever named it needs a medal because the name goes so hard. But yea this is definitely a bucket list fish, and a fish I want to try and breed because these guys are so cool. These fish are one of a kind and it is well deserved to be at number 2
1. Giraffe cichlid
Finally at number 1 we have the Giraffe cichlid and let me tell you this fish can grow really fast, like it was the fastest fish growth I have ever seen in my life. Even though their name implies that they are yellow and some are, most fish in this species are green. These guys are actually very popular in the african cichlid hobby which is kind of weird because they grow to almost a foot instead of the standard 6 inch length, like keeping this guy in a 75 would feel kinda cramped and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that long term. I’d suggest a 125 gallon tank for these guys but I know if they are being sold at chain stores the minimum I have to use is 75 gallons. But it is a case where the green fish is popular within its niche. I love these fish because of their unique pattern and color and they make a great addition to a large cichlid tank.
Well thats the end of this year's Saint Patricks day special, green fish are really slept on in this hobby and its about time we get more new species being introduced into the trade. I hope you enjoyed the video and I’ll see you in a bit.
