Standing at nearly 5 feet tall with an 8-foot wingspan, Saddle-billed Storks are among the largest birds at Sylvan Heights Bird Park! Striking black and white plumage and colorful bills that can reach nearly 14 inches in length add to their imposing appearance. Saddle-billed storks are native to open grasslands and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa, where they hunt for fish, frogs, crustaceans, and other aquatic prey. Like other storks, Saddle-billed Storks lack a syrinx and can not produce vocalizations, so they instead perform a bill clattering display during nesting. It is believed that these birds form lifelong pair bonds with their chosen mate.
