Crocodiles usually hunt down big animals like zebra, deers, wild buffaloes and birds.

But do you know why do they eat stones too?

There are 3 important reasons for that.

Number 1
It helps in their basic digestion.

Crocodiles don't swallow stones out of appreciation for the taste. They do it because the stones help with basic digestion.

They usually don't chew much their food and they don't even see which part of the animal they are eating. They just literally swallow the whole animal.
They don't even spare hard shelled animals like tortoise.

So, Rocks in a crocodile's stomach help crush and grate the hard Materials like bones and shells in their food.

These stones are known as gastroliths.

To feel full

Stone swallowing also makes a crocodile feel heavier and fuller.
This is most useful for a crocodile who's not getting enough to eat.

Better Swimming Skills

Stone swallowing also enhance a crocodile's swimming skills.
Stone makes belly side heavier and helps that side to hide in underwater which in turn helps for better hunting and swimming.
