The Georgia Aquarium opened on November 23, 2005. The largest aquarium in the world at the time(now third largest), it houses thousands of animals and hundreds of species. More than 2.6 million people visit each year.
Total volume of all tanks is more than 11 million gallons of water. The largest tank holds 6.3 million gallons of water. The aquarium sits on more than 13 acres in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. More than 600,00 square feet of covered space.
Through donations, the aquarium is the only one ever to open debt free. Even though it cost nearly $300 million to build. Construction took 27 months.
The aquarium is the only one in the world outside of Asia to house whale sharks. It is also one of only four aquariums on earth to have a manta ray. They also have 12 bottlenose dolphins and a beautiful exhibit of beluga whales. One of which gave birth in 2020.
The aquariums animals are displayed in eight different exhibits and galleries. Including the new Predators Of The Deep, which has four species of sharks. Including two great hammerheads.
Basic cost is $37.50 and parking is plentiful around the area.
