Since the 1980s it is estimated that the United Kingdom has lost approximately two thirds of its Common Toad (Bufo bufo) population. This shocking statistic isn't helped by the thousands that get squashed on our roads every spring during breeding migration. But help is on help is on hand for our Toads and other amphibians in the shape of Toad Patrol volunteers who patrol hundreds of busy road crossing points, picking up these animals from the road and seeing them safely to the other side to continue their journeys to their breeding ponds. Rob Read delves into the plight of the Toad and goes out on patrol.
Toad Patrols are coordinated by Froglife, a charitable conservation organisation whose aim is to protect amphibian and reptile populations across the UK. Here's the link to their website which includes details on the closest toad crossing to you: https://www.froglife.org/
