The binturong, also known as a bearcat, is a strange-looking mammal native to Southeast Asia. It’s not actually a bear or a cat—it’s part of the civet family. Binturongs have long, bushy tails (which they use like an extra arm for climbing), shaggy black fur, and a face that’s kind of a mix between a cat and a bear. They also have a surprising smell—like buttered popcorn—thanks to a chemical in their scent glands! Binturongs are mostly nocturnal and love hanging out in trees, snacking on fruit, small animals, and eggs.
