Sea otters are the only marine mammal without a layer of blubber to keep warm. Instead, sea otters rely on their incredible metabolism and their dense fur coat. A sea otter's fur coat is the densest in the animal kingdom. Northern sea otters, like Katmai here, have up to 1,000,000 hairs per square inch of their body! To put that in context, there are only 100,000 hairs on the average human's head.
There are some slight differences between the subspecies of sea otters. The fur of a northern sea otter is slightly denser than that of a southern sea otter. Southern sea otters, native to California, have up to 800,000 hairs per square inch. I explain their difference, and what constitutes a subspecies, in this video here → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxYOI4W6epI
Sea otters rely so heavily on their fur coat in order to keep warm that it's incredibly important that a sea otter keeps it's fur clean and free of knots and tangles. In fact, sea otters will spend up to a quarter of their life grooming their fur!
