I had a call about 30 minutes ago from someone that spotted a ruru on the side of the road walking (yes walking) towards the motorway. Incredibly he not only spotted this little ruru but was able to pull over and pick it up before it walked straight out into the traffic. It is home with us now for the night. Very alert with no head trauma, leg or feet damage but, a suspected fracture on right wing. Tomorrow we will get it into The Nest Te Kōhanga early for checkover then X-rays if required.

I would just like to put out a big heartfelt thanks to Chris for stopping to save this little ruru that in no doubt would not have survived its walk across SH2. You good Sir are a true hero. ❤️

About Ruru also known as Morepork.

The morepork is a very small, forest-dwelling owl native to New Zealand. Found in both native and plantation forests, its distinctive “more-pork” call is commonly heard at night in many urban parks and well-vegetated suburbs. Moreporks are relatively common throughout much of New Zealand but are sparse through the eastern and central South Island. Their diet consists of insects, small mammals and birds, which it hunts at night.
