A medium-sized hawk of the woodlands. Feeding mostly on birds and small mammals, it hunts by stealth, approaching its prey through dense cover and then pouncing with a rapid, powerful flight. Of the three bird-eating Accipiter hawks, Cooper's is the mid-sized species and the most widespread as a nesting bird south of Canada.

Ernest Taylor has given a sound answer but I’ll just add that, when I kept racing pigeons, hawks were a serious threat. Their dive speed plus their ability to get into a pigeon’s blind spot makes hawks extremely dangerous. Of course, if the pigeon sees the hawk in time it should be able to outrun it, but no self-respecting hawk wants that to happen. Heck, I had a hawk take one of my birds right in my backyard. Hawks are not easily intimidated when hungry and food is scarce, such as in the winter. Incidentally, hawks usually target older, slower pigeons who are not especially aware.
