The hippopotamus is one of the most dangerous animals in the world, responsible for killing over 500 people every year! This massive creature can reach up to 1.6 meters in height and weigh as much as 3,200 kilograms. It can hold its breath underwater for up to 5 minutes and, thanks to a unique reflex, it surfaces to breathe without waking up, allowing it to sleep underwater. Despite moving gracefully in water, hippos can’t actually swim. With only 15% body fat, their dense muscles cause them to sink. Instead, they walk along the bottom, pushing themselves with their legs. While they primarily feed on plants, hippos frequently kill animals and humans, even attacking creatures that come just to drink water. However, they don’t dare challenge rhinos or elephants in the same way.
