Triggerfish: Titan of the Reef. Divers Beware!
The Titan Triggerfish plays a vital role in coral reef health. They are Tropical and Solitary Fish of the Indo-Pacific. They reach an impressive 80 centimetres or 32 inches. They eat a variety of marine invertebrates, including Sea Urchins. Their strong teeth make light work of them. They also search for food by turning over rocks and stirring up sand. Smaller fish follow the Titan, as they feed on the detritus and smaller organisms that are stirred up.
However, Titan Triggerfish have also been observed being aggressive to other fish who enter their territory, when mating pairs have eggs to protect.
This can extend to Scuba Divers who will be escorted out of their territory and may also be rammed. A tell tale sign of aggression is when they trigger and erect their front dorsal fin spine.
The Trigger Fish territory extends vertically in a cone-shape from their nest site in the sand, so divers are advised to swim away in a horizontal direction.
These Titans play a vital role in the protection of the reef from overpopulation of Starfish and Sea Urchins.
They are known to protect coral reef from overpopulations of starfish and sea urchins.
