Do common species of reptiles and amphibians matter anymore? Leopard geckos, ball pythons, sulcata tortoises, red eared sliders, bearded dragons and so many others are being left in the dust and ending up in rescue situations because man has simply become bored with them. They all once commanded respect from both the zoological field and the pet trade but after decades of being bred over and over, these unfortunate animals find themselves being left behind as we humans thrust ourselves into the future of working only the highly elite. By that we mean the ultra rare. Keepers now opt for the endangered, rare and even illegal species as trophies so they can boast about how important their work is. Is their work important at all, though? That is the pressing question because while there are those that work with rare reptiles and amphibians because they truly are passionate about them, many use them as a status symbol for bragging rights, doing little for the actual animals from a conservation or preservation standpoint. In our latest dose of pure reptile education we ask the question, "If that rare turtle, snake, lizard, frog or crocodile you have suddenly makes a big comeback and is removed from any endangered list, will you still keep it? Or will you be on to the next rarest one?" Common species are an absolute joy to work with, worthy of every bit of respect they once had (and more) and many of them NEED homes. Don't lose sight of these remarkable animals and remember, being endangered isn't a compliment. It's a sad tag to describe the bottom of the barrel for an animal.
