Not every popular reptile is actually a great pet, and in today’s video we’re breaking down the Top 5 Most Overrated Reptiles… and what you should get instead. These animals aren’t bad, but the hype around them often hides the reality of their care needs, temperament, or long-term commitment. We’re looking at species like axolotls, which struggle in warm rooms and suffer from constant misinformation; ball pythons, famous for refusing food and never moving; the incredibly rare and specialized Borneo earless monitor; the defensive and humidity-sensitive Tokay gecko; the stunning but demanding green tree python; and the misunderstood heat-dependent uromastyx. Amazing animals, but definitely not the beginner-friendly pets people think they are.
But don’t worry — I’m also giving you better alternatives that offer similar appeal without the hidden drawbacks. Instead of an axolotl, try the hardy Spanish ribbed newt. Swap the ball python for a reliable Dumeril’s boa or spotted python. If you love rare lizards, look at mountain horned dragons, stenodactylus geckos, or the iconic leachianus gecko. Want something monitor-like? The ackie monitor gives you all the intelligence in a much more manageable package. And for people who want something active and fun to watch, the butterfly agama or a beautifully patterned carpet python are incredible choices.
This video isn’t about hating on reptiles — it’s about helping keepers choose animals that truly thrive in captivity. Drop a comment with your most overrated reptile, and let me know which alternative you’d pick!
