A southern sea otter puts her paws through a hole to shake my hand. Then, the sea otter puts her nose through the hole to sniff around. Sea otters have very strong and dexterous paws. In the wild, they will use them to use rocks as tools to break into the hard shells of their food. They also have extremely sensitive paw pads. A recent study found that a sea otter's sense of touch is significantly more powerful than humans!

This sea otter is named Libby. She was less than 24 hours old when she was found alone after becoming separated from her mother. Libby was rescued and rehabilitated at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but due to her very young age, and lack of survival skills, she was deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the Department of Fish & Wildlife.
