Throwback to a beautiful morning filming #Rhinos in #SouthAfrica

White rhinos (seen in this footage) are the second largest land mammal after the elephant. Adult males can reach 1.85m in height and tip the scales at a massive 3.6 tonnes. Females are considerably smaller but can still weigh in at an impressive 1.7 tonnes.

Their name comes from the Afrikaans word “weit”, which means wide and refers to the animal’s muzzle.

Rhinos are one of the most poached mammals in the world. It is all for their horn - used in Traditional Chinese Medicine - with people claiming it to be an aphrodisiac, an immunity booster, strength giver and life prolonger - with no scientific evidence supporting these claims.

So for the safety of these Rhinos, their horns were safely filed down after darting them. Rhino horn is made of the same element as our finger nails - keratin.

The majority (98.8%) of white rhinos occur in just four countries: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya
