The roaring of lions is among the most impressive animals sounds. Under heard up 5 km away, and may serve to demarcate territory. Lions of the same pride usually join each other in roaring, behavior unknown in any other felid species. Lions typically follow a calling sequence that starts with a few relatively soft, spaced calls. The calls steadily increase in frequency, duration, and volume, and then wind down, becoming shorter again, after about 40 seconds. The Lions follow this roaring with a series of grunts. The average sequence consists of 25-30 calls. (source: Handbook of Mammals in the World)
