Ostriches are fascinating birds known for their impressive speed and size. They are the world's largest and heaviest birds, standing up to 9 feet tall and weighing up to 320 pounds. Despite being flightless, they are the fastest runners among all birds. They are capable of reaching speeds up to 45 miles per hour. Ostriches have only two toes on each foot, unlike most birds which have three or four. They lay the largest eggs of any living bird, with each egg weighing about 3 pounds. Their powerful legs are not just for running; they also use them for defense, with a kick that can be lethal to predators. Ostriches are social animals, often living in groups of up to 50 birds.
They are omnivores, consuming a variety of foods like plants, insects, and small reptiles. Male ostriches can make a loud, lion-like roar to attract mates or warn of danger. Ostriches can live for 30 to 40 years in the wild. Ostriches have three stomachs and swallow stones to help grind their food, as they lack teeth. Ostrich feathers have been used for adornment for thousands of years, and their eggs consumed. They are also used as containers and for jewellery by some indigenous groups.
