The coral pipe snake (Anilius scytale) is a snake belonging to the Aniliidae family. Previously, this family had two more genera - Anomochilus and Cylindrophis, but now they are considered separate families (Anomochilidae and Cylindrophiidae). The total length of this snake can reach up to 90 cm. It has a small oval head with tiny eyes. The body resembles a small cylinder, covered with small rounded scales. The coloration consists of red and black stripes.
The coral snake lives in the rainforests of South America. It is nocturnal and half-buries, actively looking for food at night. Its diet includes blind snakes, lizards and amphibians. The venom of this snake is highly neurotoxic, but does not pose a risk to humans due to the small amount administered through bites. Ovoviviparous, the female gives birth to 6 to 15 cubs.
The species is distributed in the Amazonian regions of Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, French Guiana and Peru.
