The flying gurnard (Dactyloptena Orientalis) are a rare sight to to see in Panama. Despite its name, it can’t actually take to the skies, but with its beautiful large pectoral fins are not just for show. When faced with danger, the flying gurnard expands these fins to intimidate predators.

Despite the stunning beauty of their broad, rounded pectoral fins, the front parts of these fins might be even more fascinating. The flying gurnard’s pectoral fins are divided into four sections, featuring three finger-like projections close to its head. These fingers enable the flying gurnard to navigate the seabed, allowing it to walk, excavate, and detect its prey, which typically consists of small mollusks, crustaceans, and fish.
