Reef tanks are amazing windows into another world - but there's far more going on than we can see with our eyes. That's where science papers come in, explaining the why behind what we're seeing with our eyes. We've covered a lot throughout the past year, but what might we expect more information on in 2022?
From breeding Acropora and other SPS corals to breeding fish, or even raising phytoplankton and live foods - reef restoration and being able to quickly grow large amounts of coral and marine fish is very much an active area of research.
At the other end, probiotics and the effects they can have on coral is also an active area of research. One day soon, we may have a probiotic mixture that can help cure things like STN (slow tissue necrosis) without having to resort to any chemical medications at all. We may also learn about probiotics that can be added to a shipping bag to help a coral with heat and cold tolerance.
We might also hear more about the Coral Ark and the World Coral Conservatory, a potential solution being put forth for protecting the world's reefs using our aquariums and those in public aquariums.
