In this video I discuss why it does not matter which planted aquarium substrate you choose, dirted tanks, gravel, sand, or nothing at all in relation to feeding your plants. Plants feed through osmosis and in this video I explain how that proccess does not involve substrate. Any nutrients that may be within your substrate, or be held by your substrate like mulm detritus, or, root tabs, the nutrients must first dissolve into the water before they can be used by the plants as food. Plants cannot eat from substrate, dirt, soil, sand, rocks or gravel, they can only feed via osmosis. Since plants can literally and physically only uptake nutrients via osmosis, they do not care if you provide the nutrients with root tabs, liquid fertilizer, mulm, detritus, soil, or any other method, as long as there is nutrient rich water touching the plants cell walls.
