Even though Northern Fur Seal vocalizations can sound funny to humans, they have very different meanings to other fur seals. For example, this male Northern Fur Seal sounds like a car engine struggling to turn on. It's a vocalization that is typically produced by males during breeding season. In order to procure a mate and defend its territory, a male fur seal often emits a low, growling clicking and rumbling in his throat.
Despite their name, fur seals are actually a type of sea lion. One of the ways you can tell is by looking at their flippers. Fur seal and sea lion flippers are much longer than those of true seals. And, they can rotate their hind flippers underneath of them which enables them to stand on land. This makes fur seals highly mobile on land and the males can be extremely aggressive during breeding season.
Even though they look cute, fur seals can be dangerous. As we see in my video here → https://youtu.be/BU-hcLlRo4U
