Well over 126 million gallons of sewage has spilled into the waterways of South Florida. On a recent trip to Ft. Lauderdale, we met with Clean Waterways to find out how they are using aquarium technology to bring life back to these waterways.

Here are some more specific notes on how it's done:

These areas are extremely low flow areas where the tides have almost no effect and don't flush out the waterways.

The DEP, EPA and city scientists estimated the total volume of water and told CW to be effective they would have to push 30,000 gph per skimmer. CW is pushing 60,000 gph per skimmer. This allows for fluctuations like heavy rain and other variables that can alter how foam is made. They can go even higher if needed.

Here are some numbers from Pace Analytical Laboratory (state certified laboratory):

Skimmate results:

Nitrogen concentrated greater than 55x from canal water
Phosphorus concentrated greater than 120x from canal water
Coliform bacteria up to 12,000x concentrated

Quantifiable numbers that were not available in the hobby of what they are and how much they are actually taking out.

Results:
Removed about 7,000 gallons of dry skimmate in 3 months.

According to the 3rd water testing company hired by the state, Miami reef keepers:

Dissolved oxygen levels have gone up from 20 percent and up to 2 times as much at certain times within those 3 months.

Started to pass the Miami reef keeper's water parameter levels on a regular basis when it looked like it was impossible due to millions of gallons of sewage spilling into the very same canal way.

No more black sewage gunk in the sand and rocks. Created work stations to effectively suck up and clean the substrates. You can start to see the colors of the sand for the first time in decades.

Started to see life come back to the waterway with improved levels of oxygen, pH and overall cleaner environment.
