Spirit, a Bald Eagle and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, working with one of her Avian Care Specialists on the glove. When working with our residents, we use food as positive reinforcement, this requires a reward after a behavior occurs, to increase the frequency of the behavior.

Did you know, Bald Eagles can eat a wide variety of prey? While fish is the centerpiece of a Bald Eagle’s diet, they will also eat birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, including carrion. Bald Eagles can eat a large amount of food and digest it over a long period of time, allowing them to fast for several days.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Alaska Raptor Center, located in Sitka Alaska, provides medical treatment for over 200 injured bald eagles and other birds each year. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 80,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-a-raptor program and classroom presentations around the country.
