These walruses are throwing themselves off cliffs because they have no other choice.

When walruses gather in groups to rest, they push away the younger and weaker ones if there isn’t enough space on the shore. These outcast walruses, unable to find a flat area to rest, are forced to climb cliffs as high as 80 meters. But for a one-ton animal, this climb is incredibly difficult. And even those who succeed face an even tougher descent when hunger strikes.

The real issue, however, lies in why even the strongest walruses rest in groups. Polar bears attack walruses that stray from the herd, no matter how massive they are. This fear for their lives and the hope of rejoining their group often drive walruses to leap off cliffs.
