A predator that until the 20th century existed only in the stories of indigenous people. It could not be captured on camera for a long time, so science considered it a legend. Once Andean mountain cat could not get along next to humans and was forced to go high into the mountains. It developed a strong natural instinct to avoid humans by any means necessary. Naturalist Jim Sanderson first managed to photograph the predator in detail in 1998. Presumably, the population of these charming cats today is even smaller than the population of irbis. The length of the animal is about a meter, of which a third is occupied by the tail. Its thick, long coat helps it survive in the harsh mountains amidst snow and wind at altitudes of up to 4000 meters. Yet it can only be seen thanks to photo traps. All attempts by zoologists to keep the cat in captivity have failed, and no zoo in the world has been able to get it, let alone breed it.
