Despite their gentle appearance, hippos are highly territorial and aggressive, especially in water. They can run up to forty kilometers per hour on land and swim at thirty kilometers per hour. With jaws that exert over one thousand eight hundred kilograms of pressure, they can crush bones in a single bite. Hippos kill around five hundred people annually, making them more dangerous than lions or crocodiles in Africa.
