The axolotl is a fascinating neotenic salamander native to Mexico, Unlike most amphibians, axolotls retain their aquatic lifestyle throughout their entire lifespan, displaying frilly gills on the sides of their heads for respiration and sensory perception. Distinctive in appearance and can even change color.
