The binturong, also known as the bearcat, is a nocturnal mammal native to Southeast Asia. Despite its name, it is neither a bear nor a cat but is closely related to civets and genets. Binturongs have a prehensile tail, which they use to grasp branches as they navigate through trees. They are also known for their distinct smell, often compared to buttered popcorn, which comes from a chemical compound found in their scent glands. Binturongs play a vital role in their ecosystem by dispersing seeds, particularly those of the strangler fig tree.
