The Pantodon Buchholzi is a top feeding predator found in African rivers… it’s common name is the African butterfly fish, some also call it the African Arowana as they are apart of the bony tongue fish family like Arowanas.
They have been unchanged for hundreds of years making them a prehistoric predator, this is due to the perfect camouflage and hunting technique they possess… They are capable of jumping out of the water when attacking their food however, I’ve found when startled or “scared” they tend to swim down into the planted areas of the tank apposed to taking flight.
The African Butterfly Fish tank set up should be planted and have plenty of open surface area as they spend the majority of their time sat at the surface waiting for food to pass by… they do seek out food when the water surface is disturbed by food landing on it or live insects thrashing - also, the flow within the hopefully planted tank should be minimal to ensure they are comfortable and able to find their food.
