Pangolins are the only mammals covered in scales. Their scales are made of keratin, the same substance that makes up human hair and nails. These scales provide protection against predators.
Pangolins inhabit areas of Africa and Asia. They have long, sticky tongues which they use to extract ants and termites from their nests, their main food source. These mammals are nocturnal and are known for curling up into a ball, hiding their delicate body parts under their scales when threatened.
