- 25,821 of the 91,523 species (28.2%) that appear on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), updated in 2017, have been classified as threatened.
- Of this total, 5,583 are in critical danger, 8,455 "in danger" and 11,783 vulnerable.
- The number of African elephants has decreased by about 111,000 between 2006 and 2016, to 415,000 individuals.
