Females weigh about half as much. The body structure of gorillas is massive, with highly developed muscles; these animals have great strength. Hair and skin are black, adult males have a transverse silver stripe on their back. The hind limbs are much shorter than the front ones, so gorillas move by relying on the fists of the front limbs. The head is large, with a low forehead, a massive protruding jaw and a powerful supraorbital shaft. The volume of the brain is about 600 cm³.
Females reach puberty at 10-12 years, males at 11-13 (earlier in captivity). Once every 3-5 years, one cub is born, which remains with the mother until the next one appears. Pregnancy lasts 8.5 months. Gorillas live up to 30-50 years.
