She was a 26-year-old tourist called Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez. She studied marine biology at the University of Guadalajara. She was swimming in the water with her 5 year old daughter at the time of the attack.  She realized the shark was coming for them in the water, so lifted her child onto a floating platform in the sea. 
As she was doing this, she had  her leg bitten off,  but was able to protect her child.  Other tourists managed to grab the woman and her child away from the shark. This happened at Melaque Beach on Mexico's Pacific coast. But as they waited for medics to arrive, Maria died as she bled to death from her injuries. Shark attacks are rare in Mexico. 
In 2022, there were only 57 unprovoked bites worldwide. But this was one of those times where for some reason the animal decided to attack.
