Elk Facts - Facts About Elks. Animals Life / Amazing Facts
Elk is a mammal that belongs to the family of reindeer and the genus elk.
The moose is the largest animal in the reindeer family. The height at withers can reach 2.35 m, the body can be up to three meters long, and the weight can be 600 kg or more. Male moose are always much larger than females.
This powerful and beautiful animal is admired for its appearance. In ancient times, people idolized him. Its image can be seen on the sarcophagi of ancient tombs and the walls of caves of primitive people. As a heraldic symbol, this animal has always denoted strength and endurance. The people called it respectfully, "sokhaty," because of the resemblance of its horns to the tillage tool, the plow.
The official name was "elk," named after the red-colored wool of the animal's offspring. The North American Apache Indians had a legend of a cunning elk and the Canadian legends of a noble elk.
Elk have the largest antlers of any mammal. The antlers can weigh up to 30 kilograms and have a span of 1.8 meters. Only males can boast this decoration on their heads. Female elk are always antlerless. Each year, in late autumn, elk cast off their antlers and walk without them until spring, and then grow new ones. The older an elk is, the more powerful his antlers, wider their "shovel" and shorter spurs.
Elk are mostly sedentary, preferring to stay in one place if environmental conditions are favorable and there is enough food. Winter with a thick layer of snow and lack of food forced them to travel.
