The Rise of Frog Farming

Frog farming in China is booming! Inside this simple enclosure, thousands of frogs are raised for a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Here, the farmer spreads feed along wide ridges. The frogs scatter but soon hop back for their meal. This setup mimics their natural habitat—water for swimming, with plenty of land for resting and feeding.

Harvesting happens both day and night. During the day, nets are used, while at night, handpicking is the method of choice. Unlike fish, frogs need both water and land, so a pond suitable for fish won’t work for these amphibians.

Raising certain species of frogs on farms like this isn't easy. For example, American bullfrogs require 1.15 pounds of feed to gain just 0.4 pounds in flesh. They also prefer live prey, making them difficult to farm for profit.

However, frogs adapted to feed are a game-changer. This is a rapidly growing $8 billion industry in China. Frog meat is high in protein, low in fat, and highly sustainable.
