Seals are perfectly adapted to life in the water. Like most marine mammals, their thick layer of blubber keeps these sea doggos warm in the frigid waters while their flippers allow seals to be masterful swimmers, effective hunters, and incredibly graceful swimmers. But on land... seals can be more than a little lazy. A seal's thicc layer of blubber and short, stubby limbs make them extremely awkward and slow on land. Their unique body shape forces these seals to be quite creative when it comes to locomotion.
This lazy but clever seal is Hermes. He was rescued after being orphaned when he was a young pup. However, it was determined during his rehabilitation that Hermes has a diaphragmatic hernia that makes it difficult for him to digest large amounts of food. For this reason, the scientists and conservationists at the Department of Fisheries Canada determined that he was not a good candidate for release and was unlikely to survive in the wild. Therefore, Hermes was deemed non-releasable and has gone on to live a long and healthy life under human care where he has been an ambassador for his species, teaching thousands of people about the unique and wonderful world of marine mammals.
