Seals are mammals; like all mammals, they need to breathe air to survive. However, seals are adapted to spending a lot of time underwater, and they can hold their breath for long periods. When they dive, seals slow their heart rate and restrict blood flow to non-essential organs, such as their muscles, to conserve oxygen. This allows them to stay underwater for extended periods, with some species able to hold their breath for up to 2 hours. When they need to breathe, seals come to the surface and use their breathing holes, which they create in the ice or open water, to take in the air.
