???? Ocean Week Canada, Day 2: Giant Plumose Anemones ????
Tall, delicate, and swaying with the current, the Giant Plumose Anemone (Metridium farcimen) is one of the most iconic animals in BC’s cold waters. It can grow over 1 metre tall, anchoring to rock and piling surfaces with a soft, muscular base.
We often find dense clusters of them in areas with strong tidal flow. These currents deliver the plankton they feed on, which they catch with hundreds of stinging tentacles.
Though they resemble underwater flowers, they are animals: silent, still, and always hunting.
???? This image was taken by my dive buddy Young Tze Kuah YT Kuah during a dive at Stubbs Island. His talent behind the lens brings moments like this to life and captures the quiet beauty of BC’s underwater world.
Thanks to Captian Earl and Abyssal Diving Charters for running the charter and getting us in the water safely.
