Turtles are found in many different types of habitats throughout their natural ranges. For some, it may come as no surprise to find a turtle in a particular area. A painted turtle basking in a lily pond, a desert tortoise lumbering around cactus, an alligator snapping turtle lurking deep in black water or even a sea turtle riding the salty waves may seem commonplace to most of us. There are some places that seem as though they couldn't possibly be home to a turtle and certainly not a diversity of turtles. The salt marsh is one of them. It isn't fresh water, it isn't salt water and it has no canopy....or does it? The salt marsh hugs the forest line where a plethora of creatures live and several of them waste no time moving into it to reap its benefits. Found on every USA coast, the salt marsh ecosystems are rich in reptilian life as well as other groups of animals. Diamondback terrapins are the true estuarine native but other species live there as well....even a blue box turtle. Enjoy.
