Bison are the largest native grazer of America's Northern Great Plains. In the 1800s, American bison were declared nearly extinct due to a drastic decline in their population caused by human hunting and the clearing of land for settlements. Observing this, some farmers took the initiative to start bison ranching rather than capturing wild bison. Eventually, this effort allowed the bison population to rebound from the brink of extinction, although some bison species remain unable to be saved.
