Male water striders use one of the most manipulative tricks in animal behavior. By violently tapping the water surface, they create ripple signals, vibration waves, and predator-alert cues that spread across the pond. These ripples attract fish and frogs that hunt using surface tension and movement. The female instantly recognizes the danger. If she refuses to mate, the male keeps signaling, putting both of them at risk.
