The Budgett's frog, also known as the hippo frog or Lepidobatrachus laevis, is a strange and distinctive amphibian from the shallow swamps of Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia.
It has a wide, flattened body, a huge mouth, and a grumpy, squashed-looking face that make it look almost prehistoric. Budgett's frogs are aggressive hunters that will eat anything they can overpower-fish, insects, other frogs, and even small vertebrates.
When threatened, they puff up, hiss loudly, and open their mouths wide to appear larger and more dangerous. They spend much of the dry season buried underground in a tough cocoon to stay hydrated, emerging when rains return????.
