World's Largest Amphibian in Trouble!?
This is the largest amphibian in the world. Meet the Chinese giant salamander. At full size, this living fossil can grow up to around 1.8 meters in length, the size of a fully grown man. Remarkably, it was reported in 1983 that a 3-meter, 70 kg salamander was purchased at a local market in China!
There are only three living species of giant salamander in the family Cryptobranchidae: the Japanese giant salamander, found in southwestern Japan; the American hellbender, endemic to the eastern and central United States; and the Chinese giant salamander, endemic to the rocky mountain streams in the Yangtze River basin.
Adults of this species can absorb oxygen directly through their porous skin. They are carnivorous, feasting on worms, crustaceans, and small vertebrates like fish and frogs. Sadly, the species is under immense threat of extinction.
Aside from habitat loss, they are considered delicacies in China and are also used in traditional medicine.
