The Carpathian lynx has been assessed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List. It is strictly protected in Hungary.
It lives in the forests of Eurasia, mainly in northern Europe and Siberia.
It is the largest feline in Europe, easily recognizable by its long ears. It prefers large, closed, dense and little disturbed mountain forests where you can live without human disturbance. He is a very skillful hunter, his senses are excellent, he is mostly active at night. Its prey animals are birds, smaller mammals, but it sometimes catches animals four times larger than its own size, such as deer. Like a most cats typically attack from ambush and then bite their prey on the neck, breaking its vertebrae. Except for the mating season, it is always solitary. The territory of a male usually overlaps with several females. Only leave your hunting area if you are forced to do so.
The mating season is in February-March, and after about 10 weeks, the female gives birth to her pups, which she feeds until she is 3-4 months old, during which time she is also taught to hunt. Males do not play a role in caring for pups. Young people become independent at the age of one. Their lifespan in the wild is about 17 years, while in Zoos they can reach up to 24 years of age.
Due to the constant destruction of its habitat and large-scale hunting, the number of individuals has now decreased significantly.
